Our mission for the students of Cook Elementary Fine Arts Magnet School is that all students receive a quality education immersed in a culture of fine arts to attain 100% mastery of all required skills at the proficient or advanced level by the end of fifth grade.

KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarteners will be able to demonstrate geometric and free shapes in high, middle and low levels with and without a partner at the end of the second semester.
Kindergarteners will act by playing characters and interacting in improvisations. By the end of the year, 70% of students will show mastery by making hand puppets and cardboard scenery or sculpting characters from play dough to act out story.
Kindergarten students will perform and make drawn images to demonstrate the differences between low and high, soft and loud, fast and slow, and same and different.
Kindergarten students will create original works of art works of art using different colors, shapes and lines. They will also be able to name line, shape and color as art elements.
1ST GRADE
1st graders will be able to identify and manipulate the major muscle groups in their body by the end of the year. They will do through this through movement and on worksheets.
1st graders will act by assuming roles and interacting in improvisations by using skills in pantomime and improvisation to create characters and to demonstrate their feelings, relationships, and environments. By the end of the year, 70% of students will work collaboratively demonstrating focus and cooperation to create props and retell a fable.
1st grade students will read, write and perform traditional rhythm notation (i.e., quarter note, quarter rest, and eighth note).
1st grade students will use primary and secondary colors to create expressive works of art. They will also be able to name the primary and secondary colors and show how to make them.
2ND GRADE
2nd graders will be introduced to the 4 different pathways used in dance and will be given several opportunities to explore these pathways using their prior knowledge of locomotor movement. They will create written/drawn pathway maps and perform them in groups.
2nd graders will act by assuming roles and interacting in improvisations by using skills in pantomime and tableau to create characters and to demonstrate their feelings, relationships and environments. By the end of the year, 70% of students will show mastery of pantomime and tableau by carefully observing figures in a book’s illustrations, creating tableaux, and bringing the tableau to life and showing how the figures might move. Finally, they will make inferences to add dialogue and dramatize interactions between the characters.
2nd graders will combine manipulatives with rhythm notations to create and then perform their own original rhythm.
2nd graders will produce works of art using different media to communicate experiences. They will make choices on the media used. They will also be able to name texture as an additional art element.
3RD GRADE
3rd graders will be able to create and alter a dance composition that uses the steps to an everyday task by the end of the year.
3rd graders will demonstrate the ability to create improvisations and scripted scenes based on personal experience, heritage, imagination, literature, and history. They will demonstrate cooperative script-writing through recording improvisation and exploring historical and multicultural concepts through dramatic activity. By the end of the year, 70% of students will write and perform their own shadow puppetry fable in a group.
3rd graders will create, read, and perform original rhythms with groups.
3rd graders will demonstrate a method of creating depth in a drawing. (overlapping, placement, size, color. They will be able to add form and space as art elements.
4TH GRADE
4th graders will create a dance phrase that explores more than one dance element simultaneously by the end of the year.
4th graders will paraphrase portions of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. They will also identify the reasons and evidence a speaker provides to support particular points. They will demonstrate the ability to create improvisations and scripted scenes based on personal experience, heritage, imagination, literature and history. By the end of the year, 70% of students will show mastery in writing and performing a scene in a small group based on an event from Mississippi history.
4th graders will read and perform the notes represented by the lines and spaces of treble and bass clef notation.
4th graders will create tints, shades and tones for painting. They will add value as an art element.
5TH GRADE
5th graders will create and rearrange a dance phrase by the end of the year.
5th graders participate in interactive read-alouds of stories that have themes of inclusion and exclusion. By creating a series of living pictures (tableaux), students will apply their acting tools and skills (body, voice, imagination, concentration and cooperation) in order to demonstrate their understanding of story elements, character relationships, and plot development. By the end of the year, 70% of students will show mastery in making artistic choices as a director while leading a group to create tableaux to outline the sequence of the story.
5th graders will read and perform pieces on multiple instruments to demonstrate their knowledge of melodic, rhythmic, and dynamic notation.
5th graders will create a work of art that expresses a specific message. They will add space as an art element.
